Weird, I played with almost _all_ OpenGL settings and never got the black popups
to go away. As far I as have read (on Phoronix forums or so) there's currently
no way to get rid of the black popups.
Did you do the changes from within a running E1{7,8} or always restarted in
between?
Did you have anything applied in nvidia-settings and then loaded with
"nvidia-settings -l" once your desktop is up?
