I *think* those laptops have the top-end intel video drives....which are
not much, but enough to render openGL.

I used to have a T61, with the Intel 3000 video card, running e17 with
comp-scale and the old compositor backported from compiz (I don't recall
the name, sorry).

I would go for it. Get it installed in a different directory. Worst case,
you'll have to restart your X session. Keep a backup copy of ~/.e before
you start messing with E versions.
