No idea, because I have not built e18 manually, but in gentoo you would enable
the wayland USE flag for those packages that contain it in //package.use and
remerge them.
I wouldn't mix portage and manual builds or you'll end up in a state of
spaghetti confusion if the package manager doesn't 'know' what you have or
have not installed and where that might be.
