I tried setting the icon theme as you mentioned, changing the icon theme to a couple other I have but that didn't work. I tried adding several path settings for icons in the settings/advanced/search directories/icons also without success. I also noticed that in the icons search directories that the first default directory had an extra "/". It read /home/michael/.e/e//icons which an error. Tried reinstalling several times. No problem with xfce4 showing the icons in the app window. Looks like a path setting somewhere.
