Your making my head hurt. :-)

Does this mean that the distribution binaries may not be compiled in a 
way that my machine can use OpenGL?

On my original problem, I managed to downgrade the NVIDIA driver to 
version 304.131 using the driver listed at

http://www.nvidia.com/drivers/beta

and now I have composite rendering using openGL.  Hooray.
