E still has old school people who liked their unix desktops from the 80's and
90's and don't see reasons to redesign it... but then again feel a need to make
things still nice and flexible.

it'll come and go ... but these things do need addressing/fixing.

TBH most modules are not well maintained and bit-rot. they depend on internal
interfaces in e and that's the nature of them. they have to adapt as e changes
because keeping a "stable abi for modules" is just too insane a task.
