I know it sounds weird, but what zmike says in the task is very likely true. He does know his stuff, and he knows it well. Besides, E can trigger bugs in X that other WMs do not, because of its rather unique architecture.
You wouldn't happen to be using the Nvidia proprietary driver, would you? For the sake of testing, try using Nouveau instead. I tend to find that these things are driver related.
