Hello,
I double-checked everything, and libheif 1.17.6 was not the culprit. I
recently reinstalled Noble Numbat and was simply missing some packages.
Sorry, my bad.
Here is the detailed error output for libheif 1.12.0-2:

Hello,
Seems to work just fine with libheif 1.17.6 and 1.17.0 here.
Which problem do you see with 1.17.6?

Hello,
make fails with libheif support on Ubuntu Jammy (libheif 1.12.0-2) and
Noble (libheif 1.17.6-1).
You need to run at least Ubuntu Resolute to meet the requierement.

Hmm..
I have heif_error_success in /usr/include/libheif/heif_error.h,
included by /usr/include/libheif/heif.h.
This is libheif 1.20.2. Which libheif version do you have?

dear list,
Thank you to Kim Woelders for continuing e16.
I'm wondering how to get heif support working with today's drop of
imlib, and hoping the problem I encountered is a known problem so I
don't re-invent a wheel. Re-invented wheels tend to not be very round.
What's working, and what isn't, and the workaround:
The configure stage is successful, and ends with this precis:

However, compiling imlib2-1.12.7 with the usual ./configure, make,

[snip]
loader_heif.c: In function '_heif_writer':
loader_heif.c:186:31: error: 'heif_error_success' undeclared (first

| ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
| heif_error_code
loader_heif.c:186:31: note: each undeclared identifier is reported
only once for each function it appears in
[snip]
But that suggestion doesn't make a lot of sense, as heif_error_code
(from libheif) is an enum.
Working as expected:
configure --without-heif && make && make install
