We rely entirely on libgphoto2 for the low level camera functionality. >From looking at gphoto2 source code it looks like the D800E is listed and tagged as supporting preview. Did you have any specific problems trying to use it with entangle ? To sanity check libgphoto2 support, you can use the 'gphoto' command with the --capture-preview flag. If that doesn't work ask the libgphoto2 developers for help.
