libgphoto2 relies on the camera firmware to support a remote
capture & control protocol. Many manufacturers intentionally
cripple their cheaper cameras' firmware to force you to buy
more expensive models to get remote capture support :-(

Nikon and Canon DSLR models are the most comprehensively
supported. Old Canon point-and-shoot models also had it,
but Canon now cripples all their point-and-shoot cameras

The libgphoto website has a list of cameras known to support remote
capture and control of settings here:

  http://www.gphoto.org/doc/remote/

Best to stick to that list if you absolutely need remote capture
and control.

If you have any further queries, please direct them to the gphoto
mailing lists, since they have more knowledge about supported
models than I do.
