Luis Miguel,

We kept on running into issue after issue regarding odd topology changes with Cisco PVST+ running within the same Layer 2 domain as other switches with MSTP. You really need to pick one approach and stay with it.

We opted to go with MSTP with everything and things are much more stable now.

In my view, the Enterasys MSTP is a little clunky to troubleshoot via the command line, but the technical implementation on the wire and in the state machine inside the switch is extremely good. The proprietary MIB that Enterasys developed for MSTP is very, very helpful as well, particularly since the standard MSTP MIB appears to be a long time in coming.

Hi all,
just a few lines to tell you that I am experiencing STP issues in my 90%
Enterasys Network.

I have Xs, Ns, As, Bs and Cs. One of the X is the root bridge. We
noticed a lot of topology changes. We discovered that the changes come
from some innocent cisco 2950 running PVST+.

Disabling the STP protocol in the uplink (obvioulsy keeping just one
uplink active) or configuring manually MST in the ciscos, the topology
changes disapeared.

Don't know if you know the "why" of this behaviour, but at least I'd
like to know it, to avoid the headache I had this days discovering the
problem.

I think it is maybe because PVST+ is a propietary point of view of a
BPDU, but I don't really understand why it is standar enough to create a
topology change.

Luis Miguel.
