It doesn't look like the difference is due to video drivers.
I am curious as to why you have recently switched to Ubuntu 10.10
Maverick, since Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid will be supported for a long time
(longer than Maverick), and Ubuntu 11.04 Natty is out. Could you try
Natty (or go back to Lucid)?
