I was under the impression that all NPAPI plugins (except for Flash for whatever reason) were unable to be used anymore in 45 ESR. At least that's how it appears to be for me in my testing with the 64-bit version.

We are using an old Java Runtime v7 update 7 (product: 1.7.0_07). This runtime and the corresponding browser plugin worked OK with Firefox 31ESR and Firefox 38ESR, but it crashes with the latest Firefox 45 ESR. We get an unresponsive plugin warning and nothing else happens. Many thanks for any hints, Tom.
