I have been a stalwart Claris EMailer fan since day one and have tried all
the other email clients - Eudora, Mailsmith, PowerMail, etc but have always
returned to Emailer.
I also use - wait for it - Casady And Greens QuickDex for my contact
database (ever since my Mac Plus) and it is still by far the fastest way to
find any information. Even though it is a black and white *desk accessory*,
it still works.
I loved DayMaker, hated Claris Organizer and moved to Chronos Consultant
when DayMaker gave up the ghost a couple of OSes ago.
I have, very gingerly, moved over to Entourage because it seems to offer all
these programs' facilities in a single package and has the major advantage
that it is interactive.
The Entourage Address Book means that I have to wait longer for an address
or phone number to appear, but I've downloaded QuickView and that helps a
lot. Moving 700 odd contacts from QuickDex to Entourage is not something I'm
looking forward to, it only has records, no fields - but with BBEdit and an
AppleScript or two, I'll manage.
The Entourage Calendar is a pale imitation of either DayMaker or Consultant.
It is very buggy and feature starved. I also find the layout considerably
harder to read than anything else - needs more work. On the upside, it
sucked everything out of my Palm V correctly first go!
With a few days scripting, I've got Entourage working like EMailer. I liked
the way EMailer filed messages in 'Read Mail' when it was read and closed
instead of cluttering up the inbox. I liked the way EMailer would 'expire'
old deleted or read mail after a given number of days.
I've written a script that files read mail in a 'Read Mail' folder (unless
it is flagged), moves unread mail to 'Deleted Items' and junk mail is beamed
into deep space on maximum dispersion - and then quits the program. (If
anybody wants a copy, just ask).
I've only had Entourage for a few days, but it is beginning to fit like an
old pair of shoes.
(And yes, I hate that stupid cartoon Mac assistant too, even when it does
work!!!)
