Yes this is rather annoying.
I’ve another beef with the standard find dialog. If I search for, a name lets say. And my search results turns up empty, I realize I forgot to toggle the search criteria from messages to contacts so I hit ol’ command-f and unfortunately have to retype my “find criteria” every time I want to re-search the same name on a different basis.
