Actually, it always goes to the next message chronologically when sorted by
date.  That is, if you are sorted by date with newest on top, it will move
up the list to the next message chronologically.  A lot of people seem to
not like this change.

You can change your settings in the forward and reply section of the
preferences.  You probably want to use the short attribution line to get the
reply style you like.
