Entourage/Outlook cross-platform compatibility?

To whom it may concern,   Is it possible for users on a cross-platform network of Mac OS 8.x/Office 2001 and Windows 98/Office 2000 to share the information in Entourage and Outlook? (i.e.; contacts, calendar data, scheduling).   I have had a very difficult time getting an answer from Microsoft on this. All roads point me to Exchange Server. Is this the way to go??   We currently have Now Contact / Now Up-To-Date 3.9 for the Mac and I dug up an old copy of Now Contact/Now Up-To-Date 1.0 for Windows, but I have not tested if it will talk to each other.   We also have Consultant and Goldmine but have had limited success with both of those products.   I am looking for a decent solution that will allow us to accomplish this so any help would be greatly appreciated.
