I'm quite sure it is just deleting the category. You probably have filtered
by category to find the items, right? Then when you remove the category, the
item will disappear from the list. Verify for yourself. Try creating a
"Dummy" category, then selecting one or two contacts (maybe newly created
dummies if you are concerned) and assigning that category. Then, delete the
category. The contacts should not disappear.
