HTML ads are messing with my modem!

I belong to a couple of e-lists and one of them sometimes has HTML ads at
the bottom of the message that, when I open a message to read it, makes my
modem dial in to retrieve the linked GIF via the Internet. Is there a simple
way to get around this? I mean, besides getting DSL or ISDN?
