Dates Less than 0 days from now would give you all past events. When you get
your search results, click on the Date column. The oldest events will be at
the top (or click again to get them at the bottom). Find an event in January
1998. Click on it. Hold the Shift button and click on the oldest event
(either top or bottom event in your list, depending which way you have it.)
That will select all the old events. However, it will include birthdays
entered automatically by the Address Book which enters them in the birth
year and makes them recurring. Hold down the command button and click those
to deselect them, or be prepared to go back into your Address Book
afterwards to enter them again (by checking the "enter in calendar" box). [
This can't be automated by script because you can't do recurring events by
script.] Then press delete.
