Bingo! I think you're pointing in the right direction. I read newsgroups
via E-rage. In addition to Microsoft's server, I also have some groups via
my provider and another server in Brazil. Only the Microsoft server
continues this odd behavior of showing unread messages when in reality there
are no unread messages. I mark all read and later the group name will
appear in bold with 1-3 messages as new. When I click on the newsgroup,
there's nothing unread.
