Adobe FrameMaker is tried and true for long docs. Also cross-platform reliable to Mac, Windows and Unix. Typesetting and styling are better than Word's, in my view, but not as elegant as Adobe's other page-layout program, InDesign. InDesign doesn't have TOC and indexing capability at this time. Quark is another reliable performer, but its code is getting a bit long in the tooth. It has fairly good indexing capability now, along with a feature that allows one to consolidate all chapters into a "book." Using Quark, without a hitch, I edited and paginated a historical book with 152 pages of text and 330+ photos and graphic elements. We publish the paper 365 days a year with Quark and have never missed an edition. Had I been more familiar with FrameMaker's book-handling and graphic-handling features, I might have given it a try. I just didn't have time. InDesign has beaucoup potential and is easily learned by anyone familiar with Illustrator. It's at version 1.52; by 2.00, it should be mature. Some love PageMaker, another Adobe product. I never warmed to it, and I get the impression it's losing ground to other applications, most notably InDesign. -- Paul Jagnow Managing Editor The Vindicator Youngstown, Ohio -- To unsubscribe: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To search the archives: <http://www.mail-archive.com/entourage-talk%40lists.boingo.com/>
