I just figured out how to do this... And it doesn’t require the use of somebody's $10 shareware answer.

In OS X, go to your networking control panel and select the PPP tab, then click on the “PPP options” button at the bottom. Now uncheck the header compression checkbox and possibly also the ppp echo requests as well. That did it for me...
