Here's a follow-up, for people who like to keep track of disk failure
stories:

Apple won't replace my drive until I prove it is a hardware defect. For $49,
I got to talk to a very nice and knowledgeable tech guy for over an hour.
Working under his patient direction, I ran Disk First Aid, which reported a
b-tree error (which wasn't reported when I ran Disk First Aid previously).
The tech guy immediately seized upon as meaning the drive is fine but might
need to be reinitialized. His diagnosis seemed to be confirmed when Disk
First Aid reported that the b-tree problem was fixed (which surprised him,
because he said b-tree problems of this nature usually can't be fixed by
Disk First Aid). We were both hopeful that this meant the problem is gone.
However, I tried to copy my Entourage Messages file again -- and I got the
same noises from the disk! Disk First Aid still says the catalog stuff is
fine. So now I tend to believe Norton Disk Doctor's original diagnosis of a
media error.

Apple still requires that I reinitialize the disk before they'll do anything
more. If it won't pass a media test then, they'll replace it and refund the
$49 service call charge. Sigh. Oh well, I was planning to buy a big external
FireWire drive, anyway; it will be delivered tomorrow, and I can start
backing up whatever I can.

There sure is a downside to bigger hard drives. I'm not complaining, mind
you, but It's going to take me a month to reconstitute my hard drive the way
I want it, once all this is over. I've got Mac OS 9.1 and Mac OS X on the
same partition, so I have to rebuild two complete operating systems and all
the stuff that goes with them.
