There can be a number of different reasons. the usual one is that the
Messages file in his identity has hit 2 GB. He would need to delete and/or
archive a LOT of messages, and even if  he has deleted many but never done a
Compact, he needs to do that now. He must compact in any case: First quit OE
and give it a LOT of memory (30 MB or a lot more) ; then start OE with
option key down and click Yes to Compact. if that doesn't work he needs to
do a Complex Rebuild: start with option key down, click No to Compact, Yes
to Complex Rebuild.
