The fact that the file could be opened from within Word on the PC proves
that the file arrived in perfect condition -- this is not an encoding
problem.  My guess is that you did not name the file with the four
characters  .doc  on the end of the file name.  Windows expects file names
to end with a period followed by up to three characters.  Windows uses the
characters after the period to determine what application should open the
file when it is double-clicked. The .doc  file name extension is used for
Microsoft Word.
