If I recall correctly, this is how it was in OE 4.5, and was changed to the
present behavior by popular request (along with cmd-D becoming "Duplicate"
rather than yet another "Delete") - or just perhaps only cmd-D was Delete, I
forget now. Anyway, lots of people said they didn't see why they needed the
command key to delete...  A safety net does exist, if you don't get rid of
it: the window that comes up and says "Are you sure you want to delete?".
You can restore that in General Preferences --> Notification --> Reset
Confirmation Dialogs.
