Title: OSX, Entourage, and Verizon DSL -- anyone got this running?
Hi! I’m a regular lurker/subscriber of this digest, and have only posted a
few times, but I thought someone here might be of assistance, since the
problem relates to my ability to use Entourage X, when it arrives in the
next week or so...
I just installed OSX 10.1, plus, 1.1 update, and I really like this new (for
me) operating system. It rocks, and I can't wait to be able to use it
exclusively
But....I can't seem to get my internet connection to my Verizon DSL to work
with OSX....
Under OS9, you use the supplied Verizon DSL log-in program in conjunction
with the MacPOET INIT, for PPPoe, and of course, that's still working fine
with Entourage 2001 and my other e-mail programs.
OS X apparently has PPPoe integrated into it, and while I have supplied all
the relevant tech info, router #s, etc. etc. from my OS9 TCP/IP settings, I
can't seem to get a connection....nor can I get the Verizon DSL log-in
program to work under Classic...and at this time, OSX isn’t “officially”
supported (nor is Windows XP, apparently) although I talked to a great tech
support guy a few weeks ago, before I owned OSX, who said that Verizon DSL
works fine with OSX — he gave me some pointers then, but they didn’t mean
much at that time, and I have since lost the guy’s name — darn!)
The one thing that I can see that’s different in the TCP/IP settings from
OS9 to OSX, is that in OS9 when I configure “Manually” and connect via
“Ethernet” I have a fixed number in the Router address box — 192.0.0.2. And
that number stays fixed. But in OSX, when I set the router to that, (and
all the other numbers are the same as in OS9) when I turn on PPPoe in the
PPPoe Panel, this changes the Router setting in the first panel to a figure
that is grayed out and apparently “supplied by the server.” In other words,
I can’t get the router address to stay at 192.0.0.2 and turn on PPPoe. I
have no idea where this new router number is coming from, since I’m not
logged in at the time I am making these settings in OSX. I’m assuming that
this may be why I can’t get logged in, and all my e-mail clients say “server
not found.” (All of this stuff is pretty much “voodoo” to me, but I hope
this little bit of info helps.) Should I be using some other option in OSX
than “Manually” ...like DHCP, or Manually with DHCP (I think that was the
acronym)?? I welcome any thoughts, or suggestions, from other DSL users,
even if not Verizon.
In any event, I would love to hear from someone who has anyone successfully
connected to Verizon DSL through OSX. And I would be extremely grateful
for any help advice, and would be willing to pay for a collect call, if
necessary....I live in the Boston area...
Thanks very much. With Office X just ordered and Entourage X on the way,
I'd love to be able to log in to my Verizon DSL account via OSX so I can
start using Entourage X right away. It looks like a great upgrade, and I’m
eager to make the transition.
Best wishes, and a safe and happy new year,
Steve
