A further point I have just noticed. I can seemingly correct the problem if I drag the little double lined divider between the small calenders and the list of Calendar views way down so that the small calendar is pushed off the bottom and then drag the divider back as high as it will go. Then I get several small calendars and selecting dates in them seems to have the intended effect in the large calendar in the right pane.
