A couple of days ago, I began to see what appeared to be database corruption
problems in Entourage X on OS X 10.1.2. When I would type some text into the
filter/search field in the upper right corner of the window, the portion of
the window that shows the message headers would turn a weird gray color.
Clicking in that area would cause Entourage to unexpectedly quit. I
immediately suspected database corruption, so I did a Typical Rebuild
followed by an Advanced Rebuild. That seemed to fix things for about a day,
then the same problem started to occur. I then suspected some kind of
directory corruption on the drive, so I rebooted into OS 9 from another disk
and ran Disk Warrior 2.11 on my OS X drive, which contains both Office X and
my home directory (MUD folder, etc.). Disk Warrior found a bunch of problems
which it fixed, although it didn't point to any Entourage files or Office
files as needing to be recovered or having been in overlapping sectors with
other files.

I then tried to rebuild the database again. The Typical Rebuild went through
the whole process, appearing to work with no problem, and at the end it says
"Compacting failed. The end of file was reached". Clicking "okay" caused
Entourage to suggest that I try an Advanced Rebuild, which then went through
the whole process as if it were working and even gave the message "The
database has been rebuilt. The previous version..." Immediately after
clicking okay to the previous dialog, I got the message "Entourage cannot
access your data. To attempt to fix the problem, rebuild your database."
That brought up the Rebuild dialog box again and clicking Typical rebuild
gave the error "Compacting failed. A read/write error has occurred (-40)"
followed by "Typical Rebuild failed, would you like to try an Advanced
Rebuild?" followed by the same read/write error, followed by a message which
said "Rebuilding failed. It is likely that your database cannot be
repaired."

I then scoured the newsgroups and the mailing lists and tried everything I
could find, including removing Office X, all preferences, MUD and
reinstalling. After the reinstall, I put the Entourage database file back
into the Main Identity folder (I made a backup of my Main Identity folder
before uninstalling Office). I went through the process again, with exactly
the same results. Disk Warrior doesn't report any problems with the drive,
nor does Drive10. I'm not seeing disk problems in any other apps and if I
remove the database all together, Entourage creates a new one and starts
chugging along happily. I can also put a database that I backed up about 1
month ago into my Main Identity folder and Entourage doesn't balk at all. I
hate having to lose a month's worth of mail, and I even opened up the
corrupted database in BBedit and went through the last few weeks, copying
and pasting important email into a text file. Is there anything else I can
do? It seems like all the data is there and the database file is readable by
BBedit and I've also copied it back and forth from another drive (which also
checked out fine in Disk Warrior). Diane Ross mentioned something about a
Database Daemon that must be quit before replacing the database, but I'm not
sure what the process name is.

Thanks for any input or suggestions.
