There was also a script, called (I think) "Msg from template message", that presented a list of templates stored in a folder called (ta da!) "TEMPLATES", and then opened a new message based on the selected template. Very easy to use, could be assigned a keyboard shortcut. It was by Bryan Harris...just checked, it is named "Open Template" on <http://www.applescriptcentral.com>
