Two things:

1) Tell your friend to change his mail format from the (MS proprietary)
"Rich Text" to either "Plain Text" or "HTML."

OR

2) Go to Versiontracker and look up TNEF's Enough, which is a utility that
will extract the attachments from the WinMail.dat file.
