In a few quick tests of sending mail to myself with various options of HTML/Text and automatic/UTF-8, plus messages with various English and non-English text, it is not clear to me how to actually get a ligature to make it. In some cases, it is converted to separate characters for display, in other cases the wrong glyph is displayed, and in some cases a question mark is displayed for the ligature. I can see them just fine when I type them, and when sending in UTF-8 format they seem to be encoded into the message properly, but I do not see them when reading the received message.
