It's OK to have two contacts with the same name, it won't error. Then select your new contact, and go, in the Address Book, to the Contact menu. Select "This Contact is Me" in that menu and confirm. That sets the special icon to the new contact. if there are any links you need to take over from the old contact, just use the Link button to make them in the new contact - link to the same objects.
