Have not run into this before. It could be a bug. Meanwhile, a workaround:
When it stops and does not display the next unread message, try Option-].
That should move you to the next unread. Note, that is next unread in the
same folder, it won't move to a new folder, and it won't move to an unread
message that precedes the current one in the sort order. (Option-[ will move
back to the prior unread message, if any.) And, of course, it won't move to
messages you've already read!
