Attachments appear on desktop

Title: Attachments appear on desktop

When I retrieve mail, attachments appear on my desktop.   Any ideas how to fix this? Where would they normally be stored?  It started to occur a few days ago.  Not sure what changed.  (OS 10.1.4).
