Like when you want to arrange text aligned in columns. What aligns properly for you (using a proportional font) won't necessarily be properly aligned for someone using a mono-spaced font (and vice-versa). Granted, most of the time it doesn't matter, but I've seen many posts to newsgroups (especially Excel) where this difference has made the post nearly unreadable.
