Declining the invitations, which you can do from the yellow bar in the email the moment it arrives, or later, or deleting the event, is the only way to delete a reminder someone may have set in the event. reminders are properties of the events created, not of email messages. Deleting the event either the normal way or by declining the invitation are the only two ways to do it in 2001.
