You can get to the same place by browsing the email help in .mac so 
it seem legit.

However, you can't actually follow the instructions at the moment (at 
least I can't - the appropriate options are available when I go to 
Account Management).

So either it...

(i) is something were going to do but decided against

(ii) is something they are planning that hasn't been implemented yet

(iii) the page is talking about converting your trial account to an 
email-only account that is linked to another full ($$) .mac account. 
That was the way I initially read it when when I saw very similar 
text under the title "Adding an email-only account".

The fact that extra "email-only" accounts cost $10 for the those 
already paying the full price suggest strongly to me that it even if 
they do offer "email-only" accounts to people without full .mac 
membership they will at the very least charge $10 for it.

Also, the .mac FAQ seems pretty clear (at least at the moment) that 
your data will be deleted if you don't sign up for .mac. On the 
otherhand it doesn't mention converting to email-only accounts at 
all...
