I've used Macjordomo on OS 9, and have used the OS X version just a couple
of times so far. I have an obscure problem with it that probably would not
bother most people: I need to completely reload the membership list each
week. The non-profit I work for runs a newsletter by subscription, and they
manage the subscription database in FileMaker; that's the source of the
mailing list. We export name and e-mail address from FMP in a tab-delimited
format that Macjordomo can import. So, each week when I fire up Macjordomo,
I need to clear the old membership list and import the new, up to date one.

In OS 9, holding down the control key while launching will cause Macj to
offer to clear the members list for each list you have set up, one at a
time, so you can do it selectively. Then, you edit the list, and import the
new members list. In OS X, the control key trick does not work! Therefore, I
have to either manually enter the changes (not always a short job) or
re-enter the entire mailing list, with all the server info, username
password, etc. The author promises that the problem is being worked on, but
I have not seen a release since I encountered it.

Other than that, the OS X version seems to work flawlessly; if anything,
faster than the OS 9 version did.

It's important to know that you need to have a separate e-mail address for
each mailing list you set up, and that needs to be on a server where you
have access to the SMTP mail server. The best situation is having your own
domain with multiple mail accounts, particularly if you are going to allow
list members to post, which can generate high mail volumes. But, it is also
possible to set up mail server software on your Mac if you are directly
connected to the Internet (DSL or cable), or are content with infrequent
dialup access to the list. I just send one outgoing message a week, to four
lists, so I don't worry about keeping Macj running. I just send my messages
to the list addresses, fire it up, and it reads the messages and resends
individual copies to each list member.

On a simpler level: I have a set of AppleScripts which will do bulk mailing
to any number of people, using a tab-delimited text file address list and
text files for the message content. See
<http:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/Scripts/Entourag
e%20Scripts/Bulk%20mail%20script%20set%20MSE.sit> and the readme file at
<http:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/Scripts/Entourag
e%20Scripts/Bulk%20Mail%20MSE%20readme>.

Those are in my Entourage directory rather than EvX, but I have no reason to
think they won't work in EvX. They can either send individual messages to
each recipient, or group them in batches of 49 recipients per message (most
ISPs that have limits start the limit at 50, although some have gotten
stricter. The script could be edited to a smaller limit.)

Paul Berkowitz has a sort of group mail script that sends individual
messages via Entourage to each member of an Entourage group. He has others
that will break a group up into messages BCCd to an arbitrary number of
recipients specified by the user: you can set the maximum number of
recipients per message. I forget the exact name of these scripts, but search
AppleScriptCentral for "bulk", "groups" and similar terms.
