Someone I correspond with sends me email from his Mac (OS 9, Entourage 2001) to my Mac (also OS 9, Entourage 2001). He's sending in Arial and I'm receiving in Arial. Neither of us acquired our Arial from any unusual source. Both of us normally have Character Set on Automatic.
Here's what happens: Characters like the ellipses in his messages show up as sigmas on my Mac. Now, if I change my Character Set to Western European (Windows), the sigmas turn into ellipses, as you would expect. But why is this happening in the first place? The only difference I can find is that he has a UK version of Office and mine is US. Would a UK version of MacOffice install fonts with different character sets? If so, why don't I see the substituted characters in email from other Brits sending from Macs? If not, what might explain this?
