Yep, been there and done that even though I still keep a minimum wage AOL
account for travel access.

The big bad news is that AOL has strategized their email program to
deliberately make it difficult for subscribers to leave. There really is no
easy way to retrieve all the old emails short of forwarding them to the new
ISP one by one. A few years ago, there used to be a 3rd party program that
managed to hack into one of the older versions of AOL client program to
retrieve all the emails. But that was something like v2 or v3 of AOL client.
And I have not heard of any similar programs for recent versions of AOL
client.

As for Claris Emailer. Lovely and efficient program but a dead product now.
It is capable of retrieving unread AOL emails but won't retrieve what's
already saved into AOL Client's email database. Even then, a few times AOL
tried to block Emailer's access to their server. But eventually these got
fixed through user complaints. But irrespective of the current state of
interoperability with AOL, it won't help your friends now.

My suggestion is for them to cut their losses and move over ASAP. Forward
what they value and live with it. If they want to stay with AOL for a while
longer, then they'll just have to borrow, steal, beg for a copy of Emailer
2.0v3. Once in Emailer, there are options for migrating to Entourage through
various 3rd party AppleScripts.

Ok, I just checked my AOL email for the first time in some 3 years using
Emailer running under Classic in 10.2.4. Yep, it still works and managed to
download 25 spam emails! :(

Hope this helps.
