The bug is in EvX as well. Opening the mail into it’s own window always activates the URL for me, as well as command clicking.

The answer (and you won't like it) is Entourage 2001. There is a venerable bug in Entourage/Office 2001 which causes some users' cursors to behave badly by not assuming the appropriate attribute. In almost all cases, the cursor will still perform properly. In other words, if the cursor remains an arrow when you're trying to expand the message pane, instead of turning into that parallel line doohickey, it will still work as it should. There's one exception to this and you found it: If the cursor doesn't turn into a hand/glove when you hover over a link, it won't work.
The bug usually operates only in the left-middle, two-thirds of the screen and moving the cursor to the right side of the screen (or very far left) will usually force it to display properly. Again, the exception to this is when the cursor fails to become a hand. What I've found is that clicking to the desktop and then back into Entourage usually fixes it. If that doesn't work for you, experiment a little by clicking in and out of different areas/windows till you find something that does.
As I understand it, the bug was never fixed because it is not reliably reproducible and not every Entourage 2001 user even gets it. That, unfortunately, is no comfort for those of us who have it. I've learned to adjust and, in my case at least, the failure to turn into a hand is the rarest manifestation. It's only happened 4-5 times in 3 years. (Now my Word 2001 menus go south with increasing frequency, but that's another story and if I get into it again, Paul B. will beat me up ;-).
