Perfect. That's exactly what I wanted to know.
Thanks, Robert.
You're welcome. I hope I was not too pedantic/simplistic with you. I tried to keep the technical details down. The actual process is a little more complex than I stated but it is effectively equivalent to my list of steps.
In reviewing my message I noticed that I left out ONE case where the Bcc list gets revealed. If the message is sent with NO addresses in the To and Cc headers, then SOME MTAs will insert Apparently-To headers listing all the addresses from the Bcc headers. They do this by using the list of addresses from the "Send the message to these addresses" step NOT from the Bcc (which as I noted the SMTP Server never sees). This is the ONLY time that the To/Cc headers is actually processed by the SMTP Server. It is a fall out of a process that has to do with correcting malformed addresses NOT deciding where the message gets sent. The only time that a message can be sent with no addresses in the To+Cc headers is if the MUA does not insert a placeholder comment in the To header or if the message is being sent by a program that is emulating a MUA (such as a "RatWare" Spamming application or a program that is sending a pre-created Mail Stream).
