It's alphabetized by Last name, although appearing as First name Last name,
if you click on the "Name" column header. If you want to sort it by First
name, copy the First name, or both First name Last name, into the Nickname
field of each contact. If you want it to not just sort by last name but also
have it in Last name First name order (with or without comma), then copy
that format into nickname. When you come upon a contact with just Company,
no name, you can put that into Nickname too. and the same with any contact
who has only an email address, no name. In all these cases, go to
View/Columns and select Nickname, and then click on Nickname column to sort
by it. You can then move the Nickname column over to the far left by
dragging its "Nickname" header.

If you'd say which format it is that you actually want, I can send back a
very short applescript that will do it all for you automatically so you
don't have to copy anything into Nickname manually. (Aside from the clicking
and dragging the nickname column, which you have t do youself).
