Scott, What you need to do is turn down the master volume control on the system and use the iTunes volme to increase the music to the desired level. Think of it this way - the master Volume sets how loud that loudest sound will be on your mac, then the iTunes volume slider goes from 0 to 100% of the master volume setting you have.
