Yes. Is it possible that neither column at the top was selected? Or maybe
Email address? If you click Name column, does that speed things up? (The
selector should stick for future messages.)

Yes, it's a factor. The Autofill feature of the Address fields is so good,
I've never found the need to use the mini-Address Book - just type 3 or 4
characters of first or last name, and there you are.

No. There's no limit to the size it can handle, and I've heard of several
Address Books with more than 5000 entries. But it will affect performance in
certain areas, like this one.
