I've found, in general, that one can eventually get results on mailing lists
by posting repetitively, restating the issue each time in somewhat different
terms. Sometimes this process leads me to figure out the problem for
myself, or I get tired of being repetitive, but I usually don't get
chastised for it.

What I don't want to do is offend those kind souls who inhabit these lists,
providing what may be our only hope for solving such problems.

I'm certainly NOT an expert at this, but your issue doesn't sound like a
problem with Entourage per se.

I recently dealt with a similar issue, but I can't recall the specifics.
(Damn this Halfheimer's!)

If I had to guess, you're on the edge of a network-related timeout with that
particular account. The effective length of the timeout varies between the
case where you're checking an account on its own or among other on a
schedule. Try rearranging the schedule sequence? Make other adjustments
--mess around with settings-- that might affect the timeout?

Do a skeleton duplication of your Entourage setup using Mail.app? Sometimes
this can help reveal subtle setup issues.

Did you change the incoming (POP) mail server when you changed the account
information? You may be connecting to a completely different server.
(Pacbell.net recently required me to do this.) Even though timing should NOT
vary significantly from server to server, timing in general varies quite a
bit due to the fundamental design of the Internet. Our systems and clients
_should_ adapt, but they don't always.

Check your DNS settings? I've had problems in the past where rearranging
the order of three seemingly good name servers made the difference between a
client (mail or web, can't recall) that worked and didn't. If one name
server has become overloaded and you're working with an unusually short
timeout due to a schedule sequencing issue you might see such a failure.

Noting the content one of your later posts: This is an opportunity to nag MS
to provide scripting tools for account and filtering setup. It is simply
not acceptable that users are required to go through a complex and arduous
GUI process when there is an existing tradition of scripting alternatives to
do the job.

Thanks,

Henry
