It's not necessary to add the extension. After you open the contents of the package, take that mbox file and drag it over your inbox folder in Entourage. It will import the mail and create a subfolder named mbox. Then you can drag the contents anywhere in your organization of folders and rename the folder to your liking or just move the emails to another folder already in existence and delete your empty mbox folder. If you renamed the mbox file to a folder name first, it would create a sub folder of that name.
You only need to use the extention if you are using the Import command of Entourage. I am forever switching from Mail to Entourage so I can learn Mail for clients. I have finally decided to use Mail for my list mail and everything else goes to Entourage which I like much better. But I am impressed with the thread highlighting of Panther's mail, so it's great for mailing list reading.
