Although Entourage can readily handle thousands of messages, the size of the
database does slow some things down. You can store the Sent Items outside of
Entourage easily; just drag and drop the folder onto your Desktop, and it
will create a "mailbox" file containing all the messages. Then, delete them
from Entourage.

When you need to refer to them, you can just drag them back into the folder
list.

Or, you can create an "Archive" identity in Entourage via the
Entourage->Switch Identity menu item. Open that identity and drag the
mailbox file into it. Switch back to your usual identity. The messages are
not part of the working database, but if you need access, just switch
identities and there they are!
